to come to this country is an example of how great we are. they come to america because they know we have freedom and opportunity like anywhere else. people risk their lives to enjoy freedoms we do every day and they appear to take it for granted. seeing the rest of the world, seeing the way governments affect how people live will wake you up to the gem we have here in america. absolutely. i think also you ve got to look at president obama playing a role as well. when he was in office, a lot of the kids were growing up, looking up to him and he said american exceptionalism isn t what it used to be. every country likes to think they re e exceptional. that plays a role as well. i want to let you know, if there was ever a statue of you made, i would make sure it fully reflected you. it would be carved out of marble. i will never have a statue.
coming soon to a city near you. you watched that exchange between peter baker who asked the question of the president, thought it was the most important of the last week. why do you they? because there was a tie-in between the president not understanding what western liberalism is and reflects his approach to both american society, his attacks on the media and the courts and the total disinterest in an america that stands for the international institutions, the liberal world order. this has been the principal purpose of the united states and the world, to strengthen institutions, to limit what countries can do against human rights, to promote democracy and freedom in the world. and then you see the way he cozied up to all of the authoritarians or dictators around the world. to me it made a piece all against the back drop of the supreme court decisions. this was not a good week for american democracy or american values. either here at home or in the world. that exchange to me that you
you know also show the different facets of how press freedom is being steadily whittled away around the world and as you point out we still have a very lively and robust press here in the united states but we are concerned about the you know about the role of the u.s. president here we just put out a report at freedom house about a couple weeks ago about net freedom in the world and we found that seventeen different countries have restricted rights on the internet in the name of combating fake news and so that s really shows a direct correlation between what s happening in ited states and what s happening abroad. do you spent years with the in geo transparency international before you went to court t.v. dot org so based on all that experience what does today s time decision what does it say to. i think it shows that journalists play an important part a part in this in this world not only by fighting and revealing corruption as it is
wrote. it gave me real chills reading that op-ed. because we always talk about, as we should, that journalism is a search for truth. when you read khashoggi s words, you re reminded, i was reminded it s also about freedom. he talks about freedom in the world. and how journalism and the act of trying to reveal power, to show what s happening to inform people. it s such a powerful act of freedom, as much as it is about journalism. if anyone should ever be the story, it s this jamal khashoggi op-ed. it shines the light on what s really at the core of what journalism and really freedom s about. bob, thank you so much. please, if you haven t read this yet, read it. and thank you to the washington post for publishing it. thank you for joining me this morning. thank you. up next, days after the report on the ballooning deficit, president trump orders
