Pittsburgh, Pa. — The first paramedics in the United States were group of black men in Pittsburgh who worked for the Freedom House Ambulance Service in the 1960s and 70s.
The Freedom House Ambulance Service, which was made up of a team of Black paramedics from Pittsburgh, set the standard for emergency medical care nationwide.
