Among the tasks on New Orleans’ long new year list: launch guaranteed income.
The city recently secured $500,000 to pilot unconditional cash payments to a select group of residents. But getting guaranteed income up and running takes more than just money, and the city has a long way to go before it can start distributing funds.
“Administratively there are a lot of components to it,” said Joshua Cox, director of strategic initiatives for the City of New Orleans. “How are you evaluating it? How are you making sure that the cash payments are getting delivered? How do you do the selection process?”
stage even as many of his bigger named rivals have failed to make the cut. it s a remarkable story and joining me is andrew yang, democratic candidate for president. it s good to have you. great to see you. happy holidays. thank you for having me on. so i want to talk about health care. the first, this has been the subject of a lot of debate. you talked about the debate and campaign trail but i m slightly confused about your position. the first ad that your campaign ran was with your wife and talking about your son because she says that you d fight for medicare for all. it s been part of the platform along with the freedom dividend which we ll talk about. you recently put out a health care, some language in the website where you said you support the spirit of medicare for all which leaves me slightly confused about what actually you would want to see happen. what it means for many americans is universal medicare that s high quality and zero cost and that is exactly what
for is some version of a universal basic income. you called it dividend of $1,000 a month. there s a lot of people there s two questions about that. one is a confusion about how that would interact with other things the government does, the earned income tax credit, would those go away and be replaced by that leaving someone worse off and for the people that are in poverty or have problems with low income work, that s not enough money. the last thing i d do is take something away from americans or leave someone worse off. the freedom dividend is universal and opt in and you would be foregoing certain cash and cash like benefits that do not include health care or housing vouchers. when i talk to americans around the country and i loved the earned income tax benefit but 30% of americans were eligible for the earned income tax credit
then copays just so that you have a little bit of skin in the game. so it is similar, but we think we ve improved upon some of the other proposals that are out there. the other big issue you ve talked about, one of the kind of engines of your campaign for a while, i think it was a thing you were known for you call the freedom dividend of a thousand dollars a month. there s a lot of people who are there s two questions about that, one is the sort of confusion how that interacts with how the government does, the income tax credit and would those go away and be replaced by that leaving some worse off and second the question of for people in dire poverty or who have really have problems with low income work, that s not enough money. so the last thing i would ever do is take something away from americans or leave someone worse off. the freedom dividend is universal and opt in. and if you decide to opt in you would be foregoing certain cash and cash-like benefits that do
large part because i think cnn s moderating this one and you all are my favorite moderators. [ laughter ] so a new cnn poll shows 76% of people think the economy is in good shape and obviously, andrew, the economy has been the core of your proposition, right? when you re talking about the freedom dividend or talking about automation. 62% of democrats, though, think the economy is in good shape, right? and that s who you re talking to in the primaries. when you were last asked about the primaries you mentioned about the rise in depression and suicides and overdoses and people working multiple jobs. how does that resonate when a majority of people, huge majority of democrats think this economy is in good shape under president trump? i ve been campaigning non-stop particularly in the early states of iowa and new hampshire and if you talk to people in those states about what they re seeing in their communities, they feel like the numbers that they re seeing on
