Today, there are few americans who are not in some way grappling with our nations history of slavery, how it shaped our countrys formation from the colonial era up to the present and how it impacts our lives today, however, its virtually impossible to come to grips with that topic of slavery in america without understanding the laws that both permitted and shaped the practice. Just as we see elements of ourselves in our ancestors. So our legal, economic and social system are rooted in the laws that surround it too, surrounded slavery. And fostered it.
