ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After news that a grand jury announced no criminal charges would be brought against the Rochester officers whose restraint of Daniel Prude may have caused his death, members of the city s Black community expressed grief, anger and fatigue, along with a determination to set a new path forward.
As they did throughout fall 2020, people in Rochester took to the streets Tuesday evening, including more than 100 people who gathered at Jefferson Avenue and Samuel McCree Way, where Prude had encountered the police. No arrests and no apparent physical clashes with law enforcement were reported.

Officials in Rochester, N.Y., said Tuesday that they expect to release additional police body camera footage involving the officers who handcuffed and pepper-sprayed a 9-year-old girl, a case that is sparking outrage over how law enforcement agencies respond to people who might be having an emotional or mental health episode.
Two videos of the incident were released over the weekend, followed by the suspension of three officers. City spokesman Justin Roj said police officials are in custody of other footage that it hopes to release in the coming days.

Outrage and condemnation quickly followed from various voices in the city.
At 6:30 Sunday night, community members got the opportunity to speak their mind on the incident during a virtual conversation facilitated by Free The People Roc, the Community Justice Initiative and the Avenue Blackbox Theatre.
Hundreds of people viewed the Facebook Live video in which local advocates, activists, and concerned community members talked through their frustration.
Ashley Gantt of Free The People Roc wanted to clarify that the conversation wasn t just to discuss the issue but to demand action be taken against the officers involved. Sometimes you talk about things and feel better about it but as we talk, I m not feeling better; in fact, I m getting more and more angry, Gantt said. I want to be clear that we re just not having a conversation, but we re asking for things. One of the things we are asking for is that these officers are fired.
