good afternoon and welcome to the washington institute. i am the director of the institute and i m very pleased to welcome all of you to this special policy forum luncheon debate. we don t often do debates and this is a debate among serious people in a serious topic so you won t see the gloves on and the blood flying. but it is an important issue to talk about u.s. policy towards syria. an audience like this and audience watching on c-span knows very well the issues that are at stake, the humanitarian issues that are at stake of course, the political and motels military and strategic issues that are at stake and there is a broad national, broad consensus about the urgency of the situation in syria but yet considerable debate about what the united states should do and what the united states should be leading in order to affect the situation on the ground. we at the institute, the washington institute, have been actively engaged in trying to present a broad range of informati
chilly, but it feels nearly balmy today after yesterday. oh, yeah. the last 48 hours, we ve been generally below freezing. but finally, though, we re going to be into a mild trend here and it s going to last for several morse days into the weekend and perhaps all the way into next week. i m looking off into the distant future, don t see any major cold wave coming our way. but you know it s inevitable. we ll get another one later this winter. certainly not in the next ten days. right now, it s 34 at reagan national with a cloudy sky. we ve got a general wind out of the south-southwest. on the radar, we have a few flurries trying to reach the ground in montgomery, fredry and howard counties in maryland. and in northern virginia from southern loudoun county into western fairfax, stafford getting a few flurries there as well as southeastern culpepper county. they re moving off to the east. temperatures are generally in the upper 30s throughout much of the region. it s milder ou

the epicenter was 87 miles southwest of washington in mineral, virginia. the white house says advisers have told president obama there have been no reports of major infrastructure damage from the east coast earthquake, including airports and nuclear facilities. we have live team coverage on all this tonight. we re going to begin with doug cam her in the weather center. doug? this is something that you will probably never experience again in your lifetime here in the washington, d.c., area. your kids may never experience this again. because that is how rare this is across our area. 5.8 magnitude, centered around the mineral, virginia area. you mentioned the aftershocks we ve seen. we re going to continue to see aftershocks the next couple days or weeks. most of us will not feel them. two aftershocks today, 2.8 at 2:4 and another 2.2 at 3:20 in the afternoon. will we continue to feel aftershocks? possibly. we may see them as high as a 4, but that is way high. and i don t thin
