The bill would require the home team at High School Varsity games to provide a licensed athletic trainer to assess concussions and other injuries. The goal of this bill is to increase quality of injury assesments by using professional medical providers to decrease the number of lifelong debilitating injury. The estimated cost for these trainers is between 2thousand to 5thousand dollars annuallymoney that would come from a proposed increase in state school funding. The superintendent at westwood thinks that that number may actually be a little higher. Theres gonna be high demand for those people, so cost is going to go up. I think its going to end up being a lot higher than that. The cost however is not the only thing to consider but also the availability. Act. Todd storm lake legislator gary worthan is sponsoring the bill. He says the dot tells him the the average speed on iowas interstates is 72. All the more reason to boost it to 75. If youre not going to in 470 to slow that traffic down, lets make it legal. Todd one driver we talked with lung interstate north of des moines agrees. Most of the people are going that speed anyway, so if someone is going 70 they are actually slowing the traffic down. Todd in fact, in a very unscientific test, we set our Cruise Control at 70 along i35 and traffic constantly passed us. But not everybody is convinced faster is better. The thing is, they go fast enough as it is. In the winter time, people need to slow down. You know, its a trade off. If you want to look at safety and thats all you want to look at, it should be 25 to 30 miles an hour. Is dead set against raising the speed limit. The next step for this bill is the full Transportation Committee and the iowa house. That could happen this week. S
