Mourners gathered in Bridgeport on Wednesday for the funeral of former state Sen. Ed Gomes.
Hundreds of people paid their respects at Blessed Sacrament Church on the East End of Bridgeport to a man often called Bridgeport s elder statesman.
Gomes, 84, is remembered as a straight-talking reformer, union activist and outspoken man of the people who never backed down from a fight.
Gomes suffered head injuries in a car crash in Bridgeport on Dec. 13, and succumbed to the injuries just three days before Christmas.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal called Gomes a happy warrior whose distinguished career of public service leaves a legacy to be proud of.

BRIDGEPORT (AP) Edwin Gomes, a former Connecticut state senator has died from injuries he suffered in a two-car accident in Bridgeport earlier this month. He was 84.
Fellow Democrat Gov. Ned Lamont and multiple members of his administration were informed of Gomes death on Tuesday, said Max Reiss, Lamont s communications director.
“Senator Ed Gomes was a fighter – for Bridgeport, for workers and for the state of Connecticut,” Lamont said in a written statement. The governor noted that Gomes “was the first one to stand by my side” when he entered politics in 2006 and ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. A former Connecticut state senator has passed away after a two-car accident last week in Bridgeport.
Edwin Gomes, 84 suffered head injuries in the crash on Sunday, December 14 and was in critical condition.
City police say Gomes was turning into a KFC restaurant when he colliding with an oncoming car. Officials say the 19-year-old driver of the other car suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
Gomes, a Democrat from Bridgeport, retired from the Senate in the 23rd District last year after serving 12 years.
He was involved in various positions in government over the last five decades.
