After Hours celebrates the side-hustle culture among Melbourne s designers
Volker Haug Studio has unveiled a Melbourne Design Week exhibition featuring projects created by artists, designers and architects outside of their day jobs.
After Hours is a showcase of side projects by eight individuals and studios, celebrating how each has been able to produce work outside the limits of their field.
As the exhibition text states, it features furniture produced by interior designers, functional objects created by visual artists, and installations designed by architects .

Highlights include an asymmetric armchair designed by architect Oliver du Puy, geometric table lamps by jewellery designer Anna Varendorff and an exploration of mark-making by interior design studio Ritz & Ghougassian.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The Side Kick pendant, which laid the foundations for the Step & Kick series, is a classically simple design that has led us down a path of refining materials and an emphasis on detail. We produce a new series every year, so to take a breath and just look back on such a varied body of work is a proud, but short-lived moment before we start seeking out the next thing!
Describe the problem your work solves: We make everything by hand to develop a connection between the material and the maker. This allows for flexibility in how others interpret our lighting since the finish, scale, and configuration can all be adapted to suit each space. Because of this process, our designs each have their own unique personality imparted by the hand of the person who made it. We hope the joy we find in our work shows through in our designs.
Freadman White completes Napier Street apartments in Melbourne
Architecture practice Freadman White has created an apartment block in Melbourne s Fitzroy neighbourhood, finishing its interiors with gleaming brass accents.
The Napier Street apartments were designed by Freadman White for property developers Milieu. It is situated directly beside Whitlam Place, another residential block designed by the practice.

Whilst Whitlam Place has a green-hued exterior clad with corrugated panels of oxidised copper, Napier Street features a plain off-white facade punctuated by wide windows.
Rooms feature concrete ceilings and oak floors
An equally refined material palette has been applied throughout the interiors of Napier Street s 14 apartment units. Each home boasts oak flooring and exposed concrete ceilings, which rise up to 2.9 metres in height.
