Solutions for efficient and trustworthy artificial intelligence

There is a high demand for AI solutions in industrial applications. These solutions need to be efficient, trustworthy and secure in order to be used in series production or quality control, for example. However, the new possibilities opened up by generative AI also raise questions. Can users rely on what a chatbot says? How can vulnerabilities in an AI model be detected early on during development? At the Hannover Messe 2024, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS and the institutes of the Fraunhofer Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Alliance will be presenting two exhibits and several use cases centering on trustworthy AI solutions.

Automated, cost-effective production of mRNA vaccines as well as cell and gene therapeutics

mRNA-based vaccines and gene/cell therapeutics open up new possibilities for medical practitioners in the fight against cancer and infectious or heredi-tary diseases. However, manufacturing these innovative pharmaceuticals is an expensive and time-consuming process. The Fraunhofer RNAuto lighthouse project is aiming to use automated production technologies to facilitate cost-effective, high-volume production of mRNA-based drugs and medicines for personalized therapies which can then be made available at an affordable price. From November 13 to 16, researchers from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will, for the first time, present a screening system demonstrator for the automated encapsulation of mRNA in nanotransporters at COMPAMED in Düsseldorf (Hall 8a, Booth G10).

Improving healthcare in rural areas

With long waiting lists, significant journey times, an ever-shrinking number of doctor’s practices and the aging population, medical care services in sparsely populated regions are under mounting pressure. As part of its Neighborhood Diagnostics project, the Fraunhofer Center for Digital Diagnostics ZDD® is working to develop a digital ecosystem for delivering patient treatment close to where they live in order to ensure that people in rural areas can access high-quality medical care despite the shortage of doctors. One of the digital ecosystem’s key features are its decentralized health stations, which are tailored to local needs and feature fully automated labs that will ensure medical tests and diagnoses can be provided round the clock. The project will be on display at the joint Fraunhofer booth (Hall 3, Booth E74) at the MEDICA trade show in Düsseldorf from November 13 to 16, 2023.
