Discipline turned to death for little Ferro-James Tiopira Sio - a 5-year-old who was severely beaten and murdered by his father while they stayed in emergency housing in Rotorua.
Now his father, William James Sio, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years.
The 25-year-old appeared in the High Court at Rotorua today for sentencing before Justice Ian Gault after previously admitting five charges, including murdering his son on February 8 last year at a Union St property in Rotorua.

A 5-year-old murdered in emergency housing in Rotorua was subjected to prolonged periods of abuse, neglect and ill-treatment before being beaten to death by his father. William James Sio, 25, appeared in the High Court at Rotorua yesterday afternoon and entered guilty pleas to five charges, including murdering his son, Ferro-James Tiopira Sio, on February 8 last year.
He also pleaded guilty to two joint charges faced with his partner, Leza Rawiri, of ill-treating and neglecting Ferro-James, assaulting the child and failing to get medical care for his son after he stopped breathing.
The total tax evaded was $1,759,576.89. Menon, 38, was charged in relation to $536,582.33 of that. The charges related to tax evasion by 18 companies. None of the companies are still operating, so the two men were charged as parties to the offences.

(File pic) Kapoor was the primary operator of the companies and liaised with clients, supervisors, accounts and the IRD. Tax was evaded by various means. Sometimes the men would fail to file PAYE returns. Other times they would file false GST returns. They would deduct PAYE from employees wages but not pass this on to IRD.
