tonight filters through the system. but i have to tell you the stock markets were trading on other issues today. now, as we talked about last night, this could have other impacts, other than just on our stocks and your 401(k). what about interest rates? the federal reserve, would they decide not to make that rate hike in september? that s always a possibility as well. that s what people are going to have their eyes on in the coming weeks. greta? you know, but the thing and i have a longer vision on this meaning one week. you got other big nations that are borrowers. portugal s ireland and i think spain are big borrowers from the imf. greece cave in and they are deadbeats. what s going to happen next week if people can t get to the banks to pay their rent. it s got to have some imminent effect on europe because they are all part of the eurozone. once it has the impact on the eurozone it these ripple here to us since we are so interconnected in the global economy. that s exactly what
have seen in german media that the analysts are saying that these greek banks might only have four or five more days of liquidity in them next week could be a really tough week, greta. greg, thank you. what does the crisis in greece mean to us. joining us from sister network gerri willis is here. jerry, now that greece is a deadbeat country and incomprehensible to me. everyone saw this coming. they knew they were going to have to pay their bills and they didn t, but what does it mean here for us? well, greta i will tell you what a difference a day makes. yesterday the dow was down 350 points and today it closed up 23 points. less of an impact here today. all three indexes turned higher at the close. that s what we re seeing here. traders are starting to think that they are going to shrug off this problem and it s not going to be that big of a deal for our markets. i guess we have to wait and see news we are getting just
described in default and that leads to bankruptcy and might lead to the eurozone falling out around them here in greece. also, at about the same time $18 billion eu loan bailout program also expired. that could be big trouble because greece has already lost emergency liquidity funds from the european central bank, and that has caused trouble at banks. we have seen lines and lines of desperate people at atm s and it s getting very hard to get by here in greece. and frankly greta it hasn t been a very good night for greek prime minister. he also got the word that a new proposal, which he whipped up just about three hours before all of these deadlines hits, a new proposal for a bailout program. well, the european union said yeah we will be checking that out maybe tomorrow, maybe later. in fact there is a referendum here, greta on
the scandal is we are bailing out greece with american tax dollars. greta: this is why i think we have to. first of all the bailout is a little absurd because it is a momentary fix short term fix for greece. greece is not going to start collecting taxes, not doing anything. it is so interconnected if greece does collapse then we got spain, portugal and it all comes back to haunt us and we are already on the hook for 54 billion dollars in this first round it is going to haunt us more. even though greece i don t admire the way they ve handled their finances if we don t do something it is worse for us. i think bailouts almost never work. if greece wants to solve its financial problems it has to get its government spending underway control they are paying 14 months of work for less than 12 months of work and so on their spending is out of control. greta: if they don t, and they collapse, what happens?
