we have a possible plane crash going southbound on the 295. we heard a loud boom. we looked out and saw the fire coming out of the engine. there were 5 or 6 large balls of fire coming out of the left engine. every time there was an explosion the plane would tilt more toward the right, toward the potomac. a bird had been sucked into one of the boeing 737 s two engines. they commonly contacted air traffic control. we are losing our left engine. we are losing our number 1 engine and we are going to have to go to dulles. are you declaring an emergency? yes, sir. passengers were shaken but unhurt. we gather tissue and fluid material by the personnel from the engine. that material will be sent to the smithsonian institute investigation lab. they have a long established program to scare off birds and wildlife. the usda patrols the area and propane cannons are fired off. it is clear that flight 1559 was very fortunate. there are about 180 bird strikes every week
