The Everett School Committee voted 7-2 to move forward with negotiations with the Everett Teachers Association (ETA) and form a plan that would bring willing families back to school throughout the month of March.
Any new plan will only be in effect after an extensive negotiation with teachers that is happening this week, and a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that details every facet of the return plan.
Voting against the plan – which would bring teachers back before vaccination on March 8 and then slowly roll children into hybrid models on March 15 – were Members Allan Panarese and Millie Cardello. Both preferred a plan that would have waited until at least the first vaccination shot to begin going back to hybrid.
A formation of North American Harvard WWII fighter trainer aircraft flew over Wellington on Friday. The formation was anything but static as the pilots kept their eyes fixed on their neighbours’ wings. The old planes were floating and bobbing around as they contended with the relatively busy air at these lower altitudes. Despite fog interrupting flights out of Wellington in the morning, the skies opened up in the afternoon to reveal the capital in all her glory. Photography was not easy, as you re trying to hold onto your camera while being buffeted from both sides, and at one point my headset was blown right off my head.

The 122nd birth anniversary of Justice Gurnam Singh, the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Punjab, falls today. He was one of the architects of the agriculture policy that made India surplus in foodgrains. This is relevant today amid the farmers’ agitation against the Central Government for repeal of the three new farm laws. In the mid-1960s, India suffered from major food deficits and even famine. It was dependent on American food aid, termed PL480. The country was an unregulated market where big traders purchased foodgrains at low prices from farmers and sold them at huge profits to deficient states. The then PM Indira Gandhi raised the alarm at the distress caused by food shortages and high prices.
The Everett City Council has seemingly decided that 10 is enough when it comes to the number of members on the School Committee.
The Council and School Committee have been butting heads since late last year when the Council began a disagreement with the Schools over a CARES Act grant, and also voted suddenly to make Mayor Carlo DeMaria a voting member of the Committee amidst strong objections of the membership. That led to a new discussion about the Council adding an 11th member to the Board to prevent tie votes – with a 5-5 vote being a failed vote by Charter. Many members didn’t seemingly want another member on the Board, but in a unique part of the Charter, the Council can make decisions about the School Committee without their consult.
