Tales of lore lead to real mystery for Pine resident

Residents in rural mountain areas like ours are often the benefit of wild tales of the Mogollon Monster, famous residents, 6-foot snowfalls and perhaps random buried items. Tales of who lived in your home, on your property or in an old barn provide folklore as a backdrop to our small-town life. Recently Pine resident Lisa Campbell found just such a mystery. Campbell and her husband purchased their home in 2011 and moved in permanently in 2013. “We spent every weekend up here, we only missed one and that was for our wedding,” she said. Getting to know her neighbors and her community, she heard a lot of the local tales. The one that caught her attention was about her home.

How we raised the scarlet berry high!

The wedding was fixed for Thursday September 14 1950. The committee of the student branch met at 6.30am, and we were afraid to go away on holiday in case we missed the revolution.   And our wedding was somewhat unusual. My parents’ wedding in St George’s church, St Kitts, in 1927 had been very simple with just a few family and friends, as my mother disliked fuss. She did not wear a wedding dress, just a plain, white linen suit. In fact a woman standing outside the church, presumably disappointed by the small congregation and the lack of flowers and finery, commented that it was a “miserable” wedding. Ours was to be similarly low key.

Soap vs. Sanitizer: Only One Kills By Frank Long, MS, Editorial Director Hand sanitizers are sold in sizes small enough to be carried in a pocket and used instantly without running water. Compared to clunky bar soaps today’s hand sanitizers win the convenience argument hands down. However, something alarming was recently found in certain hand sanitizers: poisonous, colorless, flammable methanol. Danger is Skin Deep According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in a health advisory issued July 5, methanol is a type of toxic alcohol that can be lethal if absorbed through the skin. The CDC made this warning after it identified the first of several hand sanitizer products sold commercially in the United States:

religion and who s trying to make sure it s in these books about our american history. that s one of the hot topics. martha: that is a hot topic indeed. so the textbook industry says this has changed for the worse over the years. why is that? they say it s come down to identity politics what kinds up what winds up in the books. it used to be they had historians or educators that wrote the books but instead of them having pride of authorship, people are taking the curriculum guidelines and they quickly crank out a book that matches those. here s what frank long, a former textbook publisher, told us about the process. putting together a textbook is more of an engineering mass production, assembly line process rather than what you would kind of think it to be of an art san art san or a sculptor or a painter, somebody who takes time perfecting their craft and developing what would be really more of a work of art.
