Yard Junk Explained— - Free Press Online

Yard Junk Explained— In response to Frank Grande’s piece, “Maine Not as Expected” (Letters, April 6): It must be discouraging to see yards that might be “trashed.” I certainly don’t care to see garbage bags lying around with a lot of “junk.” But in defense of rural property owners, the state of one’s yard here ranges from Beans of Maine to somewhere close to what Bob Villa might have. There are fishermen, farmers, clammers, sailors, etc., etc., who might not have room to store some tools of the trade. I will admit to our place being somewhat between these extremes. I find it useful when I have a project, to go out in the yard or barn and find just what I needed to finish some old lumber or old picket fence that works great to enclose compost. And when the chickens need more fencing, there’s some of that lying around. People are busy, working hard to provide for their families, and it’s not always easy to put away things where they belong

Characteristics of Mainers— - Free Press Online

Our town governments, alas, have neither the inclination nor the resources to enforce the tidiness of their citizens.

New Yorker Pens Angry Letter That Maine Was Not As Expected

Letters to the Editor have been a feature in newspapers across the United States for decades. Often times, those letters are a mix of appreciation or irritation about something that has shown up in the publication. Occasionally, there s a letter that becomes a story on its own, where someone s written opinion elicits a strong and vocal response. If you need an example, look no further than this letter shared online by The Free Press. It reads: I am in Maine visiting my daughter, with the possibility of buying a property. Been here for two weeks, looking around in different areas, I am amazed at the number of homes that have garbage and all sort of junk or debris strewn in their yards. This is not what one thinks of Maine, especially since Mainers are thought to be socially and environmentally conscious. It’s disgraceful and an eyesore that should be addressed by the local govts. I am from Long Island, and this is not tolerated. The individual would be issued a warning to clean up
