Muskrats love fluctuating water levels Property owners, not so much

By Marshall Lee Weimer Before surveying muskrats along the St. Lawrence River as a master’s student, Alex Kua didn’t know they existed. The aquatic rodent quickly captured his attention. Little was known then about the impacts muskrats have on their environment, said Kua, now a researcher at the State University of New York. He wanted to know how muskrats shape their surrounding plant communities. A greater understanding of their impact could help guide understanding of their dependence on Great Lakes water levels and their related ecosystem roles. Better understanding the connection between water levels and regulation practices could improve conservation projects in the region.

Reservoir Tavern pizza fans, family, mourn owner Nicola Bevacqua Jr

Morristown Daily Record Nicola Bevacqua Jr. served his country as a soldier during the Korean War, then spent the rest of his working life as the second-generation proprietor of the Reservoir Tavern in Parsippany. He died Sunday at Saint Clare s Hospital in Denville. He was 92 years old. He was born and raised in Boonton and resided in Mountain Lakes for the past 28 years, according to his obituary. He is remembered for his service, but also for serving his community a menu of good times, great Italian food, legendary pizza and anchoring the foundation of a family business established by his father in 1936.

The Editorial Board: IJC correctly puts climate change at top of its agenda for Great Lakes

The Editorial Board Thanks to input from the public, the International Joint Commission has sharpened its focus on climate change as the chief threat to the health of the Great Lakes. That should open up new discussions on how to reduce harm to the lakes rather than staying stuck on arguments about the water management strategy called Plan 2014. The IJC, the international body charged with managing the waterways shared by the U.S. and Canada, delivered a progress report last week on Great Lakes water quality. The commission declared its intention to press the governments of both nations to focus on curtailing climate change and mitigating its effects.

IJC will allow larger Lake Ontario outflows, but says impact will be modest

The binational agency that controls the spigot in Lake Ontario will allow extra water to flow out of the lake this winter if conditions warrant that action. It s a modest reduction in flood risk for next year, Frank Bevacqua, a spokesman for the International Joint Commission, said Monday. As things currently stand, the IJC termed next year s flood risk moderate. But with groups representing property owners – and New York s two U.S. senators – pressing for action, the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board announced Monday that the IJC, its parent agency, has granted permission for accelerated outflows. Even 2 or 3 inches can make a difference between a flooded home or a destroyed shoreline, said Jim Shea, president of the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Alliance, a group of property owners. Any amount is very, very welcome.
