Developer Secures Planning Commission OK for Apartment Project in Downtown Santa Maria

The developer sought amendments to the standard of the Downtown Specific Plan, including reducing the setbacks, typically 15 feet from the property line, to zero on the north and west sides of the site, according to senior planner Frank Albro. A second request sought permission for fewer on-site parking spaces. “This development is requesting to rely on the on-street parking and adjacent public parking lots for providing the parking,” Albro said. Requirements normally would call for 24 on-site spaces. The developer initially proposed six slots and later added one more to make the total seven after the study session with planning commissioners, Albro added.

2 min to read “We’re asking tonight that you approve this project and we can move forward, so we can help address the housing shortage that is plaguing not only this community but our entire state,” Scott Martin of RRM Design Group said to commissioners, who approved the permit unanimously at the end of the night.  According to Albro, the complex will contain a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units and studios, with laundry facilities on each floor and open spaces including planted areas, a courtyard and a rooftop patio.  A site plan for the Vino Bello Apartments on West Chapel Street in downtown Santa Maria, from RRM Design Group, was presented to the Santa Maria Planning Commission on Dec. 16.
