Comelec eyes provincial hubs in NorMin for May 9 polls

TAGUM CITY - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has said it will put "provincial hubs" to address technical difficulties during the May 9 elections. During Saturday evening's podcast of the Cabinet Officers for Regional Development and Security-10 (CORDS-10), Comelec-10 Director Francisco Pobe said these hubs will enable technical personnel to immediately attend to possible concerns with regard to the operation of the Vote Counting Machines (VCMs). "We also established the National Technical Center in provincial hubs that will handle problems or troubleshoot defective machines," he said. Pobe said some VCMs have been deployed since March 1 to train teachers who will become members of the Board of Election Inspectors in the coming polls. Rosemary Gaviola-Tolentino of Lumbia Central School in Cagayan de Oro City, said this will be the second election season that she will be operating a VCM. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) has received no reports of direct police involvement in the removal of illegally placed campaign materials and posters as part of the "Oplan Baklas" of the Commission on Elections (Comelec). PRO-10 spokesperson Lt. Col. Michelle Olaivar made the statement on Saturday following a reminder from Col. Jean Fajardo, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson, for all police officers about their responsibilities during the operation. Fajardo's statement came amid viral photos of police officers taking down campaign materials in Echague, Isabela. In an interview on Saturday, Olaivar said police officers are only there to provide security and not help in dismantling campaign posters, which is the task of Comelec. "As of today, we have not received reports that a police officer personally joined in removing campaign materials. I don't think they will do that," she said. The PRO-10 has i
