Two former St. Francis High School students and their parents filed a $20 million lawsuit against the school Aug. 21, alleging that the administration forced the boys out after images of them interpreted to be wearing blackface went viral last summer.
Amid the Black Lives Matter protests last June, a meme mocking George Floyd’s death posted to the Instagram account @Obamas memes – since taken down – was linked to a St. Francis High graduate. In the same week, a photograph of the two boys – then rising seniors – taken from a different student’s Spotify account was posted to a group chat before becoming public on Facebook. In the image, the two boys appear to be wearing blackface.

This lawsuit is our attempt to redeem our names and reputations, and to correct the record to reflect the truth of what actually happened, the boys’ families said in a statement to the Chronicle.
