Naming and shaming pushes community to construct latrines

Leaders ought to be exemplary in any society and, therefore, in a bid to end open defecation in Kitgum, which had become a norm in many villages in the district, civil society organizations and sub-county committees decided to come up with some interventions in order to counteract the practice, writes ERNEST JJINGO.
One of the interventions they introduced was the “name and shame” intervention where local leaders who did not have proper pit latrines and washing facilities were read out and shamed on local radio stations which consequently pushed them to acquire pit latrines in order to avoid public shame and also act as a basis to encourage other members of the community to get proper pit latrines and stop open defecation.
