LAFAYETTE, Ind. Fran Cohen and her ex-husband, Menashi Cohen, stand to lose tens of thousands of dollars if Tippecanoe County prosecutors prove their civil case against the former owners of the Lafayette Deal Zone.
Prosecutors filed the civil suit Monday seeking a money and property from the Cohens, alleging that the two ran corrupt businesses that involved money laundering, racketeering, theft, forgery and perjury.
Although the civil suit alleges crimes, prosecutors have not criminally charged the Cohens, or two other co-defendants, David Cohen and Sogand Taheri.
The Journal & Courier asked Tippecanoe County Prosecutor Pat Harrington a procedural question whether court-ordered penalties in a civil lawsuit would preclude a defendant from being criminally charged for the same allegations because of double jeopardy rules.
