michelle kaczynski has more for you this morning. reporter: that statement by corker and this goes both ways because the reason the democrats were able to get so many democrats on board for this is because this bill was ultimately changed. after weeks of the battling and lobbying over this this does look like a real compromise. here is how the white house is framing it. this bill as it stands now, and it was passed unanimously by the senate foreign relations committee, and congress will vote on whether or not to lift the sanctions on iran that were imposed by congress itself and that s what congress had the ability to do and would have done anyway right. if the bill does go all the way and is passed it would present the iran deal and during the
rally around hillary clinton. and in fact, senator rand paul last week raised president bill clinton s sex scandal as an issue for hillary clinton s possible candidacy. the new york times columnist maureen dowd wrote today senator paul took dead aim at the former president saying the legacy is brute if ied by monica. what kind of traction is he trying to get by raising the issue of monica lewinski? the republicans really find the war on women narrative to be something they really like and they object to. and ran paul s framing it in terms of what bill clinton did, how can they be the party of woman if bill clinton did this? i find it to be a dubious strategy and ways to attack not as if hillary clinton had the affair and ways to attack the clintons of substance and policy. i find it to be a strategy of probably not to work and not gain him a lot of voters but where it comes from is paul
when, you know, black people are four times more likely to be incarcerated for it, even though they use it in equal rates as white people. framing it as a criminal justice issue is what i found most important. it s interesting, and lee, i ll put it to you, because the president made a key point, and i ll read it, it s important for a society not to have a situation where a large proportion of people have broken the law and only a select few get punished and it speaks to zarina s point. in terms of social justice there s something that can be done, as well. i think that s right. what s interesting to me about the interview is the language he uses. by emphasizing on the racial disparities, president obama is recognizing this as a social justice issue, as a civil rights issue, that there is a social wrong that s happening that needs to be corrected, and i think that s very important for the public debate when folks go home and talk about this at the dinner table, and as we move forw
be put into jeopardy as a result of him conceding defeat. but in reality the fact that he received a standing ovation i think suggests that there s this mind-set amongst some that they fought the good fight, that they ll live to fight another day. now, you know, the american people were the real victors in terms of the reopening of the government, even though they had to withstand a $24 billion hit. right. i think governance by extortion was the loser here as a concept and hopefully we won t see that any further. but there s a real alamo mentality amongst the tea party and some in the republican house and that alamo mentality leads them to believe that perhaps this was a victory before they fought hard. that alamo mentality is a nice way of framing it, gives us a historical narrative. when you look at the headline from today s new york times, it tells us that ted cruz is actually more popular in texas, right so, texans are sticking with cruz despite the defeat in washington, an
