Perovskite Solar Modules: High Efficiency on a Large Surface Area

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology An innovative combination of processes enables the interconnection of cells to form modules with nearly no losses. (Photo: Amadeus Bramsiepe, KIT) From cell to module without loss of efficiency: This is one of the main challenges of perovskite photovoltaics. Researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have now managed to produce perovskite solar modules with minimum scaling loss. For this purpose, they combined laser-based series interconnections with vacuum processing of all layers of the solar cell. They achieved an 18 percent efficiency on an area of four square centimeters – a world record for vacuum-processed perovskite solar modules.

Smart magnetic soft materials to develop artificial muscles and therapeutic robots

E-Mail Credit: 4D-BIOMAP The overarching idea of this research project is to influence different biological processes at the cellular level (i.e., wound healing, brain synapses or nervous system responses) by developing timely engineering applications , explains 4D-BIOMAP s lead researcher, Daniel García González from the UC3M s Department of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis. The so-called magneto-active polymers are revolutionising the fields of solid mechanics and materials science. These composites consist of a polymeric matrix (i.e., an elastomer) that contains magnetic particles (i.e., iron) that react mechanically by changing their shape and volume. The idea is that the application of an external magnetic field leads to internal forces in the material. These forces result in alterations of its mechanical properties, such as stiffness or even shape and volume changes which may interact with the cellular systems , explains Daniel García González. The researc

European Commission

European Commission As part of its function to supervise the implementation of the EU treaties and legislation, the European Commission oversees the work of EU agencies, including Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. For this reason, two representatives of DG HOME represent the Commission on the Frontex Management Board. The Frontex Regulation also requires that the European Commission be kept regularly informed of agency activities. Frontex falls within the responsibility and portfolio of its “parent DG”, Commission Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME), and the European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Ylva Johansson. In practice,
