walter joined 30 other criminology majors who volunteered to be shot or taken hostage during a sophisticated police drill at the university of maryland shady grove campus. but what we liked about the university was the fact that they had multiple buildings. they had a campus. it adds a little bit of extra challenges to responding officers. lieutenant paul rom organized the drill which had four suspects running through two buildings while shooting about 20 different people. i learned that when you are in a situation like this you have to put your game face on. and you have to have all senses heightened. because the bad guy could be just around the corner. reporter: both the suspects and the police officers were using simmunition made out of white soap and the powder goes all over you. it hurts worse than a paint ball. something christopher winkler found out when he was shot in the leg. here it just extinction. if i had actually gotten taken if i actually gotten
