>> well, a spokesman for metro still says that the escalator made a sudden stop and that's what led passengers hurdling forward into a dangerous pileup at the bottom of the escalator. but the agency has not yet spoken to one family who describe something much more frightening. this family decided to duck into town after the marine corp marathon kids fun run at the pentagon. then luke and his wife took the girls to the plaza station and got on the escalator. >> about 60 feet from the bottom i mean it accelerated like a carnival ride and kind of took off. >> it started to go a little fast. it got faster and faster. and when we got to the bottom, everyone started falling down. >> someone in front of me fell down. and fell on my foot got -- his foot fell on top of mine. and so then i tripped. >> reporter: the family ended up in the pile that left four people injured badly enough to go to the hospital. one person was very seriously hurt. >> very shook up. >> reporter: some veterans say those moments were as terrifying as time in combat for two very special reasons. >> you don't get that in a combat situation where you worry about your children being crushed. >> reporter: and he is concerned that the agency does not appear to understand what really happened on that long escalator. >> i will continue to use metro. it has served me well. but that escalator accelerated in a way that should be a real concern. >> reporter: now, i did tell the metro spokesperson about their story and was assured that the agency in in the process of a full investigation. the escalator remains closed. will? >> stacey, how did the family manage to escape injury? i know a lot of folks are wondering that one. >> i was told that the girls actually all ended up in the people. lou says that somebody helped him up. able to pull his younger daughter out. she came out missing a shoe for a while. but fortunately no major injuries. his older daughter has some pretty significant bruising but luckily nothing more serious than that. >> stacey cohen live in the newsroom tonight, thank you. another big story tonight a massive rally on the mall. as you know it was built in an effort to restore sanity and fear. a tongue in cheek idea that attracted in the end tens of thousands of people. >> t.v. comedy hosts are independent its no politicians, no anger, no fights. but there was still a point. fox's molly hanaburg takes you there. >> reporter: jan stewart maintains this rally called the rally to restore sanity and/or fear is not meant as a counter to the glen beck rally that happened back in august a. that was called the restoring honor rally. rather stewart says this is a chance for people who are fed up with the country being portrayed as idea logical and conflicted and fighting to get it together. not meant he said to be a political event. but many political signs and costumes. it is holiday weekend after all. as well as people out here for a laugh and some free entertainment. there were musical guests as well. at one point you had ozzie osborne singing. and we talked to some in the crowd to see if there was a political message from today. >> the rally is trying to show people that it is okay to educate yourselves and stand for what's right. >> reporter: as far as the crowd size the park service says they don't give it out anymore. but when jon stewart took the stage he jokingly estimated it at 10 million. he asked everybody to jump at the same time to try to create a seismic event. in washington fox news. well, the rally was meant to be more come call than political, many people believe it succeeded in getting people involved in thinking about our future. fox 5's heard that firsthand as he moved through the crowd today. >> they came by the thousands and thousands to give you an idea of how big the crowd here is a look from the top of the washington monument. some square blocks of the national mall were empty because they were fenced off for re-seeding the grass. many refusalled in the size of the crowd. >> i am happy this many people are here. makes me feel like i am not alone in the world. >> reporter: in a city that has seen many anti war and anti abortion and lately anti- government rallies. why did some come to a rally for restore the sanity really? did you really come from alaska for this rally? >> yes, i did. >> reporter: why? >> because people need to get back to the issues and not just arguing together. >> reporter: why are you here? >> to join the crowd and people who want sanity. >> reporter: what do you think? >> well, we can't hear anything but we are having a great time. >> what is my message to america today? i am holding one thing which is i actually want the elite running my country. i wouldn't want anybody who doesn't know anything running my country. >> reporter: this muslim family flew in to make sure that most americans are in the middle. >> there are people in the middle that are not extremists to anything. we are not extremists. we are not either republicans or democrats or terrorists or whatever. we might be labeled in this country. we are just people who love this country. >> reporter: only about 1-20 people in the crowd was carrying a sign that many of the signs were whimsical to baffling. here is a sample of what we saw. [ music ] >> reporter: at the more unusual rallies to ever come to washington fox 5 news. >> you can see it was big crowds. metro says they typically see 180,000 riders on a saturday before 3:00 in the afternoon. today that number was 400,000. so an educated guest would tell you about half that number or 200,000 people attended, especially when you consider many people walked, bussed or cabbed it. >> the investigation continues into a crash that killed a dc police officer and hurt another. it happened on mlk avenue in southeast around 1:30 this morning. police say the officer's car hit a pole while he was responding to a call. 32-year-old paul datama was behind the wheel. he was killed. the other officer in the car was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. paul had been a member of the police department since june of 2009. we now know the name of the teenaged girl killed in a triple shooting in the district. 13-year-old angel morris died when she and two other people were shot at a home along madison street in northwest. police say the suspect, 39-year- old robert carter highjacked a vehicle after the shooting, dumped it. and then carjacked a metro access vehicle with a driver and two passengers inside. he was arrested in prince george's county a short time later. the fire that ripped through an apartment building in northwest last month has claimed another life. it happened on 16th street in mount pleasant. firefighters immediately ran into the the victims. one person died yesterday. 21-year-old katherine alvarez passed away yesterday. they are still trying to determine the cause. the shootings and now the explosives found and the cargo planes bound for chicago. tonight a woman is under arrest considered a prime suspect. the president of yemen says investigators believe she is the one who shipped explosives found on two cargo planes bound for chicago. the flights originated in the united arab emirates and in england. >> the dubai was viable and could have exploded. the target may have been an aircraft. and had it detonated, the aircraft could have been brought down. >> fox has learned that the devices contained an explosive called ptpn the same thing in the underwear bomber's device. but this was a better quality and more powerful we are told. a congressional source says it is an indication that this was not a test run. security will be high tomorrow for the annual marine corp marathon. the run starts at the pentagon, which is one of four military buildings shot at in the last two weeks. organizers and law enforcement are not releasing much about the security measures. we will, though, have some information coming up at 10:30. temple university in filly. all 145 seats are up for grabs on election day. republicans are 39 seats away from taking back the majority in the house. and ten away in the senate. the president says the future hinges on keeping his party in control. >> but over the last two years, so many of you have continued to be involved each and every day to make sure that we could keep moving this country forward. >> the president ended the evening with a rally in his hometown of chicago. he will headline another rally in cleveland tomorrow before returning here to the nation's capital to celebrate halloween with his family. well, with the mid-term elections just days away republicans say they are making a push to add some diversity to the capacity hill mix. >> a closer look at the effort to put a record number of african americans in the gop in congress. >> the gop hopes to put a record number of african american republicans in congress after tuesday's election. south carolina legislature tim scott is one of 14 black candidating seeking u.s. house seats. he faces little opposition and is running on a campaign of limited government, lower taxes and defunding healthcare reform. >> i am completely convince that had obama care is a jobs killer t creates more opportunities for the irs to look deeper into our lives. and that it kills or destroys the greatest healthcare system in all of part of the east nation summits members but they will be given an invitation to join. >> three hikers two of whom may still be held in iran were actually picked up in iraq. according to a u.s. military report released by wikileaks. the coordinates in its report show the hikers were a couple miles from the iranian border when they were captured. >> the appearance is the american citizens were grabbed and taken into iran and being held without their will. that is clearly in my judgment almost an act of war. so what are we doing here? >> the pentagon concedes initial reports were that the hikers were taken in iraqi territory. but they say that terrain is unmarked and the borders are not clear. even so, the state department says the two remaining hikers should be released. their trials are set for november 6th. after a tsunami in indonesian killed hundreds of people rescue workers have found more than a 100 of those missing and they are still alive. damaged homes on buildings line the streets. doctors are in desperate need of medical supplies to treat the injured survivors. many right now are being treated at makeshift overcrowded hospitals. officials say bad weather fox 5 news at 10. >> in just a few hours, runners from all over the world will try to conquer 26.2 miles. the marine corp marathon kicks off early tomorrow morning. but this year there is something very different on some people's minds. we are talking security. in the last two weeks, four military buildings have been shot at, including the pentagon. >> and that's where the marathon starts tomorrow. a marathon, as you know, named for the branch of military that, well, someone seems angry w fox 5's rozz plater has a look at how law enforcement will keep runners safe. >> marathon. >> reporter: in the runoff to the big race runners are signing up and gearing up. 11,000 are first-timers and duly excited about participating in this, the 35th annual marine corp marathon. >> i'm very excited to be in this one because of the charity that i'm running for. but also the marine corp what they do for our country. >> but just under the radar, there is a current of concern. someone out there is taking shots at marine corp icons, hitting the marine core museum twice, also firing shots at the pentagon and a marine recruiting office. and the race core takes runners right passed the pentagon. they are running as a family and amongst the 30,000 in this marathon, they are hoping there will be safety in numbers. >> it would be just random chance. and there is how many thousands of people here. they pick on us, that would just be like getting hit by lightning. >> it is a little concerning to me. i have a different opinion than my husband has. but like he said it would be like getting hit by lightning. >> we need extra security so nothing happens. >> reporter: extra security is what the corp is assuring runners they will have. short on specifics, organizers are working with the u.s. park police, local police and the fbi to ensure the marathon is safe and uneventful. >> we are going to run this race, taking into account the incidents that have taken place with the shooting. we are cooperating fully with the fbi to get additional information. and additional measures are being put in place to what is already a very robust security plan that we have in place. >> reporter: despite those assurances, some runners say there are no guarantees. >> anything is possible. i think you can prepare all you want. but whatever is going to happen is going to happen. i think that the security is fine. but i think if somebody wants to do something crazy, it's going to be hard to stop them. >> reporter: i'm rozz plater, fox 5 news. >> several street closures along the race producer. jamal is on trial for killing brown in 2006. also found guilty in connection with the murders of two other men. and the attempted murder of a third man. one was a key witness in the murder case. he will be sentenced in december. also in court, with bruises and a black eye, the serial stabbing suspect. authorities say officers pounced on the man and used a stun gun when he tried to punch a jail guard wednesday. this was his first court appearance in michigan, where he is charged with stabbing three men to death. he is also suspected in a string of attacks in leesburg, virginia and ohio. >> in one maryland community they are battling a nasty pest with a new weapon. people in a columbia neighborhood are trying to tackle the tick that carries lime disease. un diagnosed, lime can be a devastating illness. tonight fox 5's beth parker shows us what they are doing to keep people from getting the disease in the first place. >> reporter: when harriet oliver heads out on this early morning walk in her columbia neighborhood she knows her dog daisy won't be the only furry creature around. >> i will see 12, 15, 20 deer. >> reporter: a lot of people are crossing paths with deer. where there are deer there are ticks. >> i have kids and you are always checking after they have been outside. >> reporter: gotten so bad that one neighborhood complained to sherry who represents kings on the columbia association board of directors. the neighbors said in a community with 26 houses, there were 22 cases of lime disease. it's personal. >> i experienced neurological lime disease. it affected the spinal chord. i was unable to walk. they didn't really know what had happened to me. >> five years later she is helping to push forward what you see here. this is a deer tick station. the corn attracts the deer. what looks like paint rollers has a pesticide on it. >> the skin or fur rubs up against this and it is applied to the areas of the deer where they are most found around the head, neck and ears. >> workers replenish the corn and apply the tickicide. >> we come out once or twice a week depending on the deer activity. >> reporter: this is two stations in two wooded areas of columbia. this is a pilot project. but if it is effective they would like to expands it. >> we are setting up a system that is going to be effective to lower the number of ticks without harming the deer population. i think that that's very important. this is a humane way of going about finding a possible solution to this problem. >> absolutely. i would be for it. >> reporter: the pesticide doesn't hurt the deer or other animals. neighbouring jurisdictions who use the system have seen a reduction in the tick population. columbia is hoping it can also win the battle against this tiny with lots of people and lots of cars. although as you said tonight earlier cars seem to be staying away. >> it is good people watching. >> yes. >> a good night to ride a cab. you certainly can. the today. plenty of sunshine. >> we did. >> the winds picked up a little bit. but overall a nice night. another shot of everybody down in georgetown just enjoying themselves. a little bit of a stronger breeze earlier today. the winds are light for tonight, however. in most places anyway. and skies are starting to clear out. so let's begin now with a look at the weather headlines and put everything in perspective for you. the weekend will continue to be sunny. that's at least some good news. you will enjoy more sunshine. the winds will pick up once again though as we move into sunday afternoon. so be prepared for that. and a cool halloween is in store. a little bit of a drop in our temperatures. tonight is actually a little bit warmer than last night was. unsettled weather in the forecast as we move through into late week. here is look at today's highs. just 1-2 degrees offer the seasonal mark of where we should be. 60 degrees at all three airport today for a day-time high. should have been 62 at national. right at the seasonal mark. we will see a change in that in the five day forecast. 54 degrees right now at national airport. humidity at 57%. winds from the south at 13 miles per hour. we will see them die down a little bit into the course of this evening as well. there are some areas that do have winds a little bit stronger. show you that in a second 1 at ballot 50-degrees at frederick this hour. to the west 47 at martinsburg. and up the mid-atlantic 53 in boston. 51 in new york. 52 for richmond. so pretty much everywhere, we are pretty much in the same range as far as those temperatures are concerned. but we do have some cool nights that will be ahead. now, the winds from the south now are fairly light as far as dc is concerned. but take a look here to the west, dulles 20 miles per hour wind gusts right now. those winds will increase as we move into the afternoon hours tomorrow. a little bit later, not in the morning hours but later in the day. and we've got a frontal system heading our way as well that will impact our conditions. in the meantime a ridge of high pressure moving off the coast of the carolinas. we will see these few clouds which are very light upper level clouds. they will start to clear out. our skies will be clear into the overnight hours as well as we move through the course of tomorrow to get back to that sunshine. tropical weather, tropical storm sherry is just losing its tropical characteristics. no more advisories coming out at all. headed off to the northeast atlantic. hurricane tomas is strengthening. moving away from st. vincent and st. lucia which is good news. still tropical storm and tornado warnings there. but it is heading its way to the north and northwest. so still bears some watching. we will definitely keep an eye on it for you. a dry frontal will move its way through. cooler air as well. the winds will be gusty in the afternoon hours at 25 miles per hour. so the wind gusts. but for the better part of the day and the beginning part of the day @ least for the marathon, not bad at all. a little cool for the start sunday morning. 46-52 with a northwesterly light wind. we know tomorrow is halloween. so for the trick or treaters tomorrow night a little on the cool side. but we are talking basically some clear skies. temperatures will gradually creep their way into the scary 50s. but here is a look at what we are expecting for tonight then. clearing skies and light winds at 42 degrees for the overnight low. and for tomorrow no shortage of sunshine for you. the winds will pick up in the afternoon at 64 miles per hour. 64 for the day had been -- day- time i should say. we don't want 64 miles per hour winds. the good news is the winds will be held off at least until the marathon gets under way. which is good news for the runners. they won't have to deal with the winds at that point. here is a look at the five day forecast for you then. the temperature starts to gradually drop as we move through into the week. heading into the 50s. overnight lows dipping. a little cooler sunday night and monday night to the far west in northern maryland where we could possibly see some patchy frost. so let you know what happens there. there is a chance that that should happen that the national weather service will issue a frost advisory or weather warning. that's a heads up for everybody. >> winter is knocking at the door. >> pull out the
