Shooting of Elkhart 5-year-old ruled accidental

ELKHART — Police have determined a Tuesday morning shooting, in which a 5-year-old boy was shot in the chest, was accidental. The boy found a gun in the house and the gun went off when he was handling the weapon, Elkhart Police Department detectives said.  Officers and medics were dispatched to the residence in the 1300 block of Wildflower Street in the Four Seasons Mobile Home Park just after 11 a.m. Tuesday morning for reports of an accidental discharge. The boy was rushed to South Bend Memorial Hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest. He was then flown to Riley Children s hospital and his status has been changed to non-life threatening according to police.

(AP) A 5-year-old northern Indiana boy who was shot in the chest inside his family’s home appears not to have suffered life-threatening injuries, police said Wednesday. Elkhart Assistant Police Chief Chris Snyder said the boy was taken to a South Bend hospital Tuesday morning after officers and paramedics were called to an Elkhart mobile home park on reports of an apparent accidental shooting with injuries. The boy, who had been shot in the chest, was initially believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries, but Snyder told The Associated Press on Wednesday morning that the youngster has since been stabilized and his injuries no longer appear to be life-threatening.
