La generación a la que perteneció Guillermo Sucre Figarella, fallecido en Caracas el pasado 22 de julio a los 88 años, jugó un papel esencial en la construcción de la democracia venezolana surgida del 23 de enero de 1958, cuando fue derrocado el dictador, Gral. Marcos Pérez Jiménez. Sufrió cárcel junto a los entonces jóvenes estudiantes, Jesús Sanoja Hernández, Rafael Cadenas y Manuel Caballero, y padeció el exilio a partir de 1952; primero en Chile, donde prosiguió sus interrumpidos estudios de Filosofía y Letras, y más tarde en París, donde obtuvo un doctorado en Literatura Latinoamericana, en 1955.
