Fort Smith Times Record
It s unclear whether Fort Smith s quarter-percent sales tax will be renewed, but city directors are intent on supporting the services it supplements.
The sales tax, which provided $5.6 million in 2020 that was split between the parks and fire departments, gives the two departments revenue to make upgrades such as those seen recently at Harley Wilson Park.
Set to expire Sept. 22, 2022, if not renewed through a vote, the board recently discussed what the tax means for the city.
At the Friday Board of Directors workshop, City Administrator Carl Geffken said the time before the expiration date will allow the board, subcommittees and residents to decide how they would like this tax to be configured before it expires in September 2022.This discussion came in light of the projected sunset of the three-quarters-cent sales tax, which is set to sunset in 2023 after sales and use tax bond issues are fully paid off.
