The long-discussed redevelopment of the old Knight’s Inn property in the City of Monroe hit a major snag Monday when city council unanimously agreed to terminate the Brownfield Redevelopment Plan for the property at 1150 Ternes Drive.
Council and city administration cited a lack of progress on the project and continued difficulties in obtaining necessary documents from the potential developer, Fort Wayne-based Sampal LLC, as the main reasons for the termination of the plan, which was originally approved in September 2017 as Sampal looked to construct a four-story Comfort Suites on the now-vacant site.
Council held a public hearing on the resolution to terminate the plan back at its Feb. 16 meeting, at which point representatives with Sampal addressed the delays in starting the project. Council agreed not to act on the resolution at that time, but to instead place the item on the budget for its April 5 meeting, giving Sampal a nearly two-month extension.
