Each week, american artifacts takes viewers into archives, museums, and Historic Sites around the country. At the outbreak of the civil war washington dc was a lightly defended city and vulnerable to attack. By 1865, the Nations Capital arguably had become the most fortified city in the world with the ring of about 70 arm ports and batteries circling the city. We visited three of the surviving forts with the arthur of the study on the civil war defenses of washington for the National Park service. Right now we are in the museum which has override it different artifacts in it. One of the nice ones is we have a map of the defenses that gives you a good idea of where they are today. Woodard fort ward, which is here , and today were also going to foote, which is down here. And all the way up to fort stevens which is up there.
