As the flag is unrolled, i think speak a little bit to the project that brought this particular flag about that were about to hoist today. Last year, the Maryland Historical society launched the stitching history project. Two noted individuals, the ceo of the Maryland Historical society and the director of education spearheaded the project. The first stop was to heirloom weavers because what they did was they researched from the Smithsonian Institution the accura accura accurate weave of the material. Theres very few places that can do that. It was a custom job. Heirloom weavers did that. They are in redline, pennsylvania. The material did, indeed, come from the United States. [ applause ] the stripes and the blue are made out of wool bunting. The stars are made out of cotton. So they have the authentic material. But the second step was to have it authentically stitched. No sewing machines were used in the making of this plan. Indeed, over 200 stitchers from across the state of marylan

These guns were manufactured during the American Civil War, 50 years after the war of 1812. It shows the great layeredness of history that fort mchenry had. Fort mchenrys history begins with the words of francis got key. But the fort has made direct contributions to practically every american war since
Lead nurses stationed at fort mchenry during the first world war. And thats another important theme here, the role of women at the time. You know a lot of times women are ignored when it comes to military history. In this time where women were seeking to gain the right to vote, women really proved themselves as nurses during the first world war. And over 300 female nurses were stationed here at fort mchenry. Like i said, some of the first programs to help the disabled American Veterans were promoted here. One program, they taught chemistry, so a man who was wheelchairbound because he lost a leg was taught chemistry or taught calligraphy. One man who could no longer hear was taught to use a lino type machine. A noisy typesetting machine. A lot of men were trained. There were well over 100 different skills you could learn. It was really a cuttingedge hospital for its period. So over 100 buildings here as part of General Hospital number two. You can see how many buildings there were. Some
