Cleaning and disinfecting is continuing after two confirmed cases of monkeypox were reported at Fort Bend ISD’s Ridge Point High School, school officials said.

Fort Bend County Judge KP George and leaders from the County Health Department and Office of Emergency Management Friday announced efforts being made in the County in response to the uptick in COVID-19 cases amongst unvaccinated residents and the highly contagious Delta variant.
Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Jacqueline Minter reported that the first confirmed case of the highly-contagious Delta variant appeared in Fort Bend County one month ago with the vast majority of the severe illnesses having been from unvaccinated people.
“We have been able to verify the Delta variants increase in viral activity, in test positivity, in cases, and hospitalizations, including ICU,” stated Dr. Minter. Of those cases reported to the Fort Bend County Health Department, 77% were of the Delta lineage.”

“We’re at the cusp of getting many more vaccines in the community, and we’re positioned to push those out,” said Dr. Jacquelyn Johnson-Minter, director of Fort Bend County Health and Human Services. “If there’s another surge, we should be able to blunt it. . We should be able to blunt it if we’re continuing to hammer on the vaccines.”
As of late February, officials said they were hopeful vaccinations of the general public could begin as soon as early spring. However, challenges remain when it comes to getting vaccines to underserved and vulnerable populations, including those who lack information about the vaccine, leading them to not trust it, and those who lack access to transportation.
