Print article A group of young twenty-somethings set sail for Hawaii in 1941, 79 years ago. My late father, Walter Danison, drafted into the U.S. Army, was among them. He was headed for Fort Barrette, on Oahu. He thought he was going there to end his tour of duty; he didn’t know a war was about to begin. On the morning of Dec. 7, the Japanese flew over Pearl Harbor in a surprise attack. My father battled side-by-side with brave men, for this great nation, all its people and the Constitution. I’m certain men of different color, political affiliation and religious belief were fighting with him. At home, his fiancé, my late mother, battled fear and prayed.
