The A-League salary cap was dropped from $3.2 million to $2.1 million for the 2020-2021 season, after a reduction in television broadcast revenue.
With no broadcast deal in place yet for the 2021-2021 campaign, a further drop in the value of the salary cap has been mooted.
Regan, who left Adelaide United in January 2019 to play in Malaysia, feels the salary cap will be reduced again and then even more players will depart the A-League for richer contracts off-shore.
At the end of the 2019-2020 season, there was a flood of players moving overseas into Asia including Dimi Petratos, Joal Chianese, Jacob Tratt, Gary Hooper, Steven Taylor, Brad Inman, James Donachie, Dylan Fox, Adam le Fondre, Scott Neville, Jordan Murray, Nick Fitzgerald and Alex Grant.
