Mondale, a liberal icon who lost the most lopsided presidential election after bluntly telling voters to expect a tax increase if he won, died Monday. He was 93. The death of the former senator, ambassador and Minnesota attorney general was announced in a statement from his family. No cause was cited. Mondale followed the trail blazed by his political mentor, Hubert H. Humphrey, from Minnesota politics to the U.S. Senate and the vice presidency, serving under Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981.

Mondale, who was the 1984 Democratic nominee for president and also served as a longtime senator from Minnesota, died peacefully from natural causes, the family said.  It is with profound sadness that we share news that our beloved dad passed away today in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mondale s family said.  The son of a minister, Mondale, known as Fritz , became one of Minnesota s most famous political figures in a state known for Democratic politicians. He was selected in 1964 to replace then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey, a mentor, in the Senate. In his 12 years in the U.S. Senate, Mondale followed in the footsteps of Humphrey, the lead author of the Civil Rights Act, in championing civil rights and other progressive causes.
