The Callery pear tree (or Bradford pear tree) is popular in many suburban neighborhoods, due to its gorgeous white blossoms. However, Massachusetts officials say it's also an invasive species that crowds out other plants.
Holyoke is now one of a handful of cities and towns home to the invasive spotted lanternfly. The species known to be a nuisance, wreaking havoc on plants and putting a damper on outdoor activities.
State officials call it a small “satellite population” that was spotted earlier this month in the southeastern section of Worcester, southwest of Lake Quinsigamond.
