PEDEEÂ â Mid-valley foresters are still feeling the pain from the February ice storms. Those who had acres affected have been working tirelessly to minimize their losses and undo some of the damage.
For Nancy Ross Hathaway and her husband, Greg Peterson â who own about 200 acres near Pedee in Polk County â itâs led to months of hard labor and thousands of dollars to rehabilitate their affected acres.
âIt looked like a bomb got dropped off out here,â Hathaway said, describing how trees were flattened, or âpancaked,â and how the tops and limbs of many of them had been stripped, leading to a type of tree known as a âcandlestick.â

Hubbard County Land Commissioner Chip Lohmeier told county commissioners Tuesday that he was contacted by the owners of Val Chatel.
“Apparently, they are in the market to sell it,” he said of the former ski lodge and supper club located at 32546 County 4. “They’ve been contacted by a gentleman from the Trust for Public Land, probably weeks ago, and said they had inklings that property was up for sale and they may have some funding available to purchase that property to give to the county, whether it be for a park or campground, whatever.”
