Change-Ups: Kalaczinski named MOAâs Educator of the Year
Lillian Kalaczinski, an associate professor for Ferris State Universityâs Michigan College of Optometry, has been named the Michigan Optometric Associationâs 2021 Educator of the Year. Kalaczinski is a 1998 MCO graduate following three years in the pre-optometry program at Ferris. Kalaczinski served as director of vision services at a Grand Rapids-area community health center before joining the MCO faculty in 2015. Kalaczinski also is chief of primary care services at the University Eye Center, and an adviser to registered student organizations unique to the college.

Love for her job and the community keep her motivated.
âIâm very lucky that I have a job and a job that I love,â said Penatzer, assistant manager and office manager for Forest Hills Area EMS in St. Michael.
âNo matter where I go, Iâve been in almost every house in our coverage area,â she said. âI do love my job. Not many peopled can say that.â
It wasnât always the case. Penatzer said she nearly quit the job not long after she began.
âWhen I first started in 1988, we had a vehicle accident on 219 and the lady who was ejected looked identical to my grandmother,â she said. âMy grandmother was the most important person in my life. I almost didnât stay in the job. Eventually, I got over the trauma.â
