His remarks were followed by Mitch Mcconnell criticizing senate crast democrats for the debate calling it a talkathon. This is 20 minutes. Mr. President . For 14 hours and 50 minutes, beginning Late Wednesday morning and ending early thursday morning, the entire nation watched the senator from connecticut teach our republican colleagues a lesson and another things not the least of which is courage. It is easy to say we stood for 14 hours. We talk a lot about filibusters in the senate. They dont happen very often. I have been in congress for 34 heres and i have probably led two more than anyone else. They dont happen much. There are a lot of fake filibusters but this was real. I admire and appreciate the junior senator from connecticut very much. Four days after 49 innocent americans were gunned down in a nightclub, senator murphy stood here as indicated f
In the House Chamber when hes giving his state of the Union Address and shout out you lie when in fact he was telling the truth. When you try to undo a policy that has helped hundreds of thousands of young men and women come out of the shadows, and go to school and go to work, and you vote in favor of that, then youre no different from the guy who yells out that immigrants are rapists, that they bring crime and drugs to this country. And so you cant try to separate yourself from the stick you come from. And no one should try to distance donald trump from the republicans in congress. They are one and the same. He is just an offspring of what we have seen over the years coming from republicans in congress. And so its time to change, because if youre a bystander, youre allowing things to happen, and for many people, including me, this becomes very personal, because donald trump and republicans in congress are talking about my parents, and about me, and its time for us to stand up and say

And there are just so many names you saw a lot of them in that video and there are hundreds more in this room and not with us tonight. I want to thank each of the witnesses for coming today. I also want to thank you for your testimony and your time and commitment, each of you, fighting for this issue and fighting to see justice served. I am proud. I want to thank senator cornyn, senator blumenthal and senator schumer for joining with me and introducing this legislation. I am particularly grateful for chairman grassleys offer to expedite this legislation through the full judiciary committee. There are many times when washington doesnt work or facet work well and we gridlock. Im hopeful that this will be an issue in which we see some real bipartisan cooperation and we see both the senate and house of representatives act and act expeditiously. Seven decades is far too long to wait for justice. Grassleys full written statement will be admitted to the record without objection. And we will keep the hearing record open for an additional five business days. That means that the record will be closed at the end of business day
