please. the president keeps setting up this intellectual dishonest straw man, that there are those who either want to do nothing or those who want to send in the military. he uses that argument over syria, he uses that argument over iraq, afghanistan. i mean, that s intellectually dishonest. because none of us who worry about americans national security, and have lived through these crises for many, many years want to send americans into harm s way. but we do want to have a strong and steadfast america, and a president who when he draws a red line and chooses to, and then violates that red line, that then hurts the united states of america. it s not that we re weak. we re not. it s a matter of our reliability. and around the world they believe we re unreliable. now, one of the other big foreign policy problems that he s had for the last year is edward snowden and the leaks. and as you know, brian williams
operationalizing the president s speeches, if i can put it this way, on foreign policy issues and it didn t begin with the challenges of the second administration. we have to go back and look at perhaps the cairo speech and see, in fact, how that unfortunately fell short. but the second piece is very important. no president in history hauls commanded all foreign policy questions in his own way. the cold war was very hard. people understood that things weren t going to work out. we had east berlin. we had budapest. we had prague in the 50s and 60s where because of the soviet union in a military way because of the pieces of territory there was no military answer. the third piece is that we ve tried military, particularly in iraq and afghanistan. and they have not turned out to be simply splendid. there are real faults in being able to believe that going to war is the answer to all foreign
democrats. absolutely. i think it is interesting the republicans after the last election and last sort of four, five months sort of bought into this idea of let s have a fight over income inequality, helping the poor. they haven t really dunk much except for accept that as a battleground. democrats have tried to roll out policies and have the traditional background of agenda else that they have done or pursued and that allows them to do things like talk about minimum wage which i don t think whether get done this year. stranger things have happened in an election year. it does give them the ability to sort of create their own narrative going into november when given the fact they are facing things like foreign policy problems, the president is having now, obamacare. they need something they can work from and this is i think it helps them. john, there is an interesting question. have you the president giving local interviews to press folks in local markets pushing minimum wage

there is a lot going on in the world right now. turkey is now swaying under straight days of increasingly massive protests against what previously seemed to be a stable government. mostly young people, but all kinds of people calling the government authoritarian and anti-democratic and taking to the streets in protest. the war in syria is the ongoing war in syria with complex dynamics in politics. and politics surrounding that conflict, encompassing russia, the eu, israel, lebanon, jordan, iraq, turkey as well. there s a war on in afghanistan with two u.s. soldiers, a policeman, nine kids killed in the eastern part of the country today, and a suicide bomb attack outside a school. the war we left in our wake in iraq heated up with the u.n. saying this weekend that the death toll just last month from bombings and assassinations and other attacks in iraq was over 1,000 people killed. it is a big, complicated world out there, with a lot of particularly difficult foreign policy problems con
