conversations taking place between the two of them. in the hearing to confirm trump s new ambassador to saudi arabia, republican senator marco rubio had this to say about the assad crosaudi crown prince. he is reckless. he s ruthless. confrontation in his foreign policy approach and i think increasingly willing to test the limits of what he can get away with with the united states. he s gone full gangster. it s difficult to work with a guy like that, no matter how important the relationship is. what does it mean for someone with access to top-level security information to be meeting with a world leader who has gone full gangster? i ll ask msnbc counterterrorism and intelligence analyst malcolm nance that question next.
substantive it s that there s a significant divide in the conservative movement that s reflected on fox news related to the foreign policy approach in general. i just have to say that it s a great time to have a conversation about the difference between journalism and entertainment. and i think one of the more embarrassing things for fox news is, you know, this is not a partisan issue, it s not an ideological issue. but the way fox news on the whole has kind of followed the thought of republican members of congress who are to the far right, and also just of where they assume their audience is, which is, you know, really in trump s base, is just, i think, a disservice, frankly, to viewers and to americans. if you say you are a news outlet, then you have to hold yourself to a certain standard, not because that s the law, but because that s what our democracy requires. they re not upholding their end of the bargain. i think the longer they go on saying that they are a
pyongyang. what we re seeing right here is a president who is still a salesman. when we hear that kim jong-un smiled as heatched this video, this propaganda video that was proposed to him, it s understandable talking to foreign policy experts today. they say he s looking at t video e could have sanctions ultimately removed to have some kind of capital come into his country, and that the president s inferring that kim jong-un could be overseeing that kind of development inside north korea. that means the u.s. is not trying to have a regime change situation, that kim jong-un could keep his power even if he has to denuclearize. so this is all part of the trump foreign policy approach.
ways to make them feel not so threatened and secure, the united states could put out a statement we don t intend regime change in north korea. they re reasonable concessions in return for the denuclearization of the nuclear arsenal. however, unconventional, foreign policy approach may be, the summit is on. does the fact we have even reached this point holding a summit prove trump s unconventional approach has some merit? no. if you make a big enough concession, you can get a deal. as i say, the north koreans have wanted a meeting with the president of the united states at least since the clinton administration. we know that. they have repeatedly asked for it. it was the clinton administration that said we want something verifiable and concrete in return for that. and even then maybe we ll do it. it was seen as a prize that was not to be given away easily. the bush administration was so tough on north korea there was
sunni countries, saudi arabia and the emirates and has really adopted a line of foreign policy that s been antithetical to u.s. interests. qatar had a lot of ground to make up. as you know, nicolle, qatar found itself on the wrong side of trump s perceived foreign policy approach at the beginning of the administration. i don t know it s a fact they got nothing for hired michael cohen or using him as a conduit. maybe it s worse for qatar. maybe they sanded off some edges. i don t think we understand fully unless michael knows or has evidence, what was the relationship, did they hire michael cohen, did they pay him, get us a meeting and we ll pay you later? what were they specifically asking and requesting? who were those people in the elevator, who were they meeting with and what were they seeking. these are all legitimate, very significant questions and i think we have to understand before we can make any judgments about whether or not this was merely swampy or actually
