Be wary of maids wanting to quit to return home quickly, says Michael Chong

PETALING JAYA: Employers should be wary after several cases were reported of foreign domestic helpers borrowing money from illegal moneylenders before absconding to their country of origin.

Immigration Dept: We have not received any applications for maids

PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department has received zero applications for hiring of new foreign domestic helpers despite the go ahead for maid agencies to start the process while waiting for borders to reopen. While it has been a month since the government announced this, the Immigration Department has not processed any fresh applications for foreign maids. “We have been preparing to receive applications since the announcement was made but we have not received any (applications), ” said its director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud ( pic) when contacted. He said there could be several reasons for this, including the country’s borders remaining closed.

Help wanted on hiring foreign maids

Waiting to be placed: Maids who have been waiting to come to Malaysia to work have gone instead to other countries like Singapore and Hong Kong due to the border closure. PETALING JAYA: Maid agencies have applied to bring in new foreign maids since the government’s announcement allowing for new hires but so far no response has been received. The National Association of Human Resources Malaysia (Pusma) president Zarina Ismail said many of its members have applied to get new domestic helpers through the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System (FWCMS) but no approval had been given. “We have yet to receive any official directive or proper response on this, ” she said when contacted yesterday.
