the head of the naacp, cornell books, about to walk over the bridge. i wanted to talk a home. how are you feeling as you re about to make this journey? for me it feels more akin to a pilgrimage than a walk. you think about the pham fact that so many people laid down their lives and limbs for the right to vote. to me who was born like the president, same year really after the civil rights movement or being too young to remember it. for me this is a way of connecting with my forebearers. with all of these folks. it s profounding spiritual experience. not a political experience. you know that language of the spiritual i was asked earlier how would you describe the mood. and i kept saying it feels like love and not an easy love but what toni morrison might call a thick love. have you felt that here?
to say we don t have it today or the service of congressman john lewis. so i believe the president was honest but he was speaking not only to our foremothers and our forebearers but also these young practitioners of democracy who on the streets all across the country standing with the naacp, standing with other organizations, but really standing atop the american constitution and speaking to the conscience of the country. and you ve been standing with a lot of those young people. i ve been very heartened talking about many organizers and activists from a previous era, many of whom are still doing work. i asked them about black lives matter and they said you know what i like what those young people are doing. they may not be to where we were but i feel like they are where we were when we first started initiating, like the young people who sat down at the woolworth counter. is that what you think, this generation has the capacity to move us forward in some ways? absolutely. the fact
young people have mobile devices and cell phones and transform a moment in ferguson into a national and global conversation on police brutality. but we have to take it a step further. with the voting rights act imperilled, the naacp is calling on a generation to engage on america s journey for justice. from selma, alabama, to washington, d.c. across alabama, north carolina south carolina, virginia and into the district of columbia, 850 miles of direct actions and demonstrations. we re saying look our forebearers did it then you can do it now. but we ve got to stand together in a multi generational effort. i love that he in that moment was multi-generational. stay right there, everybody. the movement may not be the revolution may not be televised but apparently it might be tweeted and this is a movement that has spanned generations and it remains undeterred.
