year america began to gain jobs, a painfully slow but steady job recovery has taken hold for the last 18 months. here is the key if you want to bring it back to politics. if the economy adds just over 100,000 jobs per month between now and the election, america will have gained back every single job lost during the obama presidency. mort zuckerman head of u.s. news and world report. he s also an extremely wealthy and successful democratic businessman and he wrote this week president obama s economic programs have failed. mort, the economy is on pace, as you saw, to get back every job lost under president obama about a recession he didn t start. why? why are you saying it s failed? let me put it this way. in the first place those numbers are slightly misleading, we need 125 to 150,000 jobs to take into account. i m not finished. not debating, just facts. compare this to any previous recession, 1970s, 1980s at this point the economy was growing between 6 and 8%. the largest
to keep them on board. reporter: absolutely out uf out of the question. this is a nice sweet deal demanded by the unions. the unions are beholding to the administration. the administration is beholding to the unions. they want a relationship that really works. a $5,000 signing bonus, more new hires of union workers, extra profit sharing. no increase in healthcare costs to the worker, that is a very sweet deal. it puts enormous pressure on ford and chrysler which have not yet got even an agreement with the uaw and ford didn t get any bail out money. megyn: they now have to offer similar deals to their unions, or their union members will leave and tray to go work for gm? reporter: that is highly unlikely, but the pressure is on ford, and ford really cannot afford to come up with the same kind of money that gm has got even, taxpayer money essentially. what you ve got here is ford stock, which is a reflection of its financial condition has been cut in half because of this kind
you, charlie, what do you think the toyota sales decline was bad, but it wasn t nearly the drubbing i would have thought. and lexus, in fact, the luxury brand was up. it wasn t a drubbing. in fact, the toyota stock was up today and ford stock was down. the market neil: francfractionally. but everybody thought toyota would take a bigger hit. they could haven t played it worse than they have. do incentives and maybe they will come back. i don t think they re done with but varnish off the shine. it doesn t help when you have congress and really important people just brow-beating your executives, it doesn t look good to the public. they have uphill climbing to do. neil: browbeat anyone you want but be fair about it. be fair. there are jerks everywhere. if we re here to save american lives we re here to save lives no matter what they re driving. neil: he s got such nice suits after one wearing they re gone. you don t see them again.
fleet sales really, really positive. if you do own a ford, this is interesting, the resale value of your vehicle has gone up according to the company, on average the resale number for ford is up by about $1300. that s interesting, jon. also to note real quick here, ford stock has gained about 500% in the last 52 weeks, so investors have baked in a lot of this news for ford, but it s going to be an interesting company to watch going forward, and we ll get gm and chrysler numbers in the next few hours. jon: jenna lee, thank you. jane: right now on capitol hill, a controversial issue is being played out. secretary of defense robert gates announcing today his full support for repealing the ban on gays openly serving in the u.s. military. that s the policy known as don t is ask, don t tell. these are pictures from the senate armed services committee. secretary gates is announcing a yearlong study on the best way to end the ban. he s announcing that the
