Drag racing and Ford Mustangs go hand in hand and have done so pretty much since the first generation of the car rolled off the assembly lines. The ‘Stang sitting before your eyes is a drag racer by design, and not one converted recently. It was allegedly made this way the same year it rolled out the Ford factory doors and wasted no time in hitting the strips. From 1966 to 1971, it was a regular presence in one of the many racing series of the time, Division 5 AFX.

The two Ford models from the company’s beginnings, the Model T and Model A, are without a doubt the oldest cars in the world to still be around in some form or another. Sure, most of them look and perform nothing as they did when in stock form as they are now part of the hot rod world. There are certain cars that, after enough time has passed since they were made, deserve to become museum pieces. They deserve to be admired solo or as part of some collection, and they kind of need to be occasionally sold so that their value goes up. 14 photos
The Ford RS200 of old is not one of them. Sure, the nameplate is so important, historically speaking, that it would certainly be a perfect fit in a museum or collection. But that would also be a waste as, perhaps more than any other car out there, the RS200 was built to be driven. Hard.

Greatly improved twice during its life cycle, the Fox-based pony kept its head up high during the Malaise Era when the base motor came in the guise of an 88-horsepower Pinto four-cylinder. The Ford Motor Company even had to drop the 5.0 in favor of a smaller V8 for a few years due to the second oil crisis, but the small-block engine came back with a back in the 1980s.
