Athens will be getting new police and fire vehicles as they continue to upgrade public safety equipment. The City Council, Monday approved purchasing a truck for the assistant fire chief and six vehicles for the police department.
âThe fire department doesnât currently have a replacement schedule for fleet vehicles,â Fire Chief Russell Marshall said.
The current fire chief vehicle is a 2013 Dodge Ram 4x4. It is one of three administrative vehicles for the department. The others are driven by the fire chief and fire marshal. They are all out of warranty.

The council also approved the purchase of several vehicles, including six 2021 Ford Police Interceptor Utility Vehicles for about $315,000.Â
The vehicles replaces three Chevrolet Impalas and three Ford Interceptors, which have between 70,000 and 107,000 miles of use.Â
Two of the vehicles will have high performance EcoBoost engines requested by the Decatur Police Department for occasions that require an improved emergency response.
Computer equipment and body cams will be transferred to the new vehicles from the replaced vehicles. They are expected to be delivered within 90 days.
But with funds budgeted and a more clear picture, they voted to move forward with several suggesting to Wrighton that they attempt to purchase six more vehicles in order to make up for last year.Â
