to the grand canyon, walk into the 100-year-old hotel and you see a picture of fred harvey. i had that experience with my wife 20 years who. who the hell is fred harvey? a lot of people have asked that question. it s a great way of asking about the history of america. fred harvey turns out ran the first chain of anything in america. he ran the restaurants and hotels in chicago and los angeles and civilized the american west. his story had never been taken seriously journalistically before, and i was lucky not only to recreate this multigenerational family business, the harvey s were the biggest in the 1880s through the 1940s, but fred s stuff was in the family. it was a very personal book as well, and it gave the insight that most people know fred harvey because of the harvey girls. it was a great american journey for me. being from the east, this was my first trip to the west. i recreated the life of the west which easterners don t understand. they think of it as a whole oth
