good to be with you, i m katy tur. we re watching a couple of stories, incoming an update from the governor of maine on the mass shooting last week. we re going to bring the news out of that. first, there are some major developments out of israel. the idf says it freed a hostage inside gaza. colonel yuri magadesh was e retrieved. she is said to be in good condition. as for the rest of the hostages, prime minister benjamin netanyahu today argued the ground incursion and intense bombardment are helpful. our common assessment of all of the not only cabinet members but the security forces and the military is that the ground action actually creates the possibility, not the certainty, but the possibility of getting our hostages out. because hamas will not do it unless they re under pressure. they simply will not do it. you ll notice netanyahu was speaking in english there. that was a press conference for foreign media, an acknowledgment that israel needs to convince the world t
surprised the west in its in their capacity, not only to defend but take territory back. and to be creative and to have a learning curve. now, much of this depends on the west s willingness to provide the weapons, in quality and quantity, that the ukrainians need to take back more territory. yes, crimea would be very, very difficult, obviously. i don t no one knows for sure if ukraine could, by force of arms, take back all its territory, but we have consistently, consistently underestimated what ukraine is capable of doing. i would only think that that it is probably smart not to underestimate them at this point. anne, following up on that exact point, no doubt the west has underestimated ukraine to this point in the war. but there is chatter right now that there is growing skepticism as to how successful this spring
tucker s questionnaire calling for a more robust defense of ukraine. senator mitch mcconnell, who really hates being called moscow mitch, because he blocked two measures aimed at preventing foreign interference in u.s. has been steadfast in the support of ukraine. he told his party to wake up to the threat of russia today, he got support from senator and trump caddie lindsey graham who pointed out russia s invasion of ukraine was a big deal and noted that the last time someone in europe claimed the land of others and tried to take it by force of arms was adolf hitler s attempt to build a third reich. he also pointed out that russia s claim to taiwan is also based on the proposition of a territorial dispute. it s just so hard to keep track of lindsey s beliefs, sorry. also as if they need a reminder of what kind of actor russia really is, earlier today, russian jets harassed and then collided with a u.s. drone over the black sea.
history, right, it is almost unbelievable that it happened at all when it happened. but then when you are in the middle of studying that history and you have news cycles like the one we re in right now and it feels all the more impossible that this is what s happening right now. i mean, in our current news cycle right now, you have got the immediate former president of the united states putting out a statement on social media that some kind of ominous vague warning for americans who are jewish saying jews need to be more appreciative of him. jews need to get their act together, he says, quote, before it s too late. nobody knows what he s talking about or what he s threatening american jews with here, but this is really happening now. we re three weeks out from the next election. after the last one when he sent an armed mob of his supporters to overthrow the government and make him leader by force of arms, last week the republican party posted this on social
