By the time I was born, they had stopped making Hudsons, but in 1963, my family had a secondhand green Hornet, with a Terraplane hood ornament and a hole in the floor on the passenger side.
On a Friday afternoon in November, my father (Hap) came home from his job as a frame man, climbing telephone poles and splicing them together for Ma Bell. Hap parked the Hornet in front of our house in South Ozone Park and got out a bucket and hose to clean it. Any excuse to spray water, I grabbed a sponge and soaped up the front right bumper. I didn’t need to see Hap; I could smell his cigar from near the left hubcap.
